Jack Knight Songwriting Academy

Where your word's become art, and your thought's become music

I am writing this post because it seems as if the original purpose of music; which was to inspire, guide and tell the story of a people, tribe or land seems to have died. Whether it was the great Dynasties of sub-Saharan Africa, the great Chinese empire or the lands of India music was composed and written in such a way that each was unique yet still maintained a sense of naturalness which transcended time in such a way that those rythyms stil survive til this day.

today however many simple sample sounds never learning, knowing nor caring what emotions the original artists of those samples were feeling, thinking or trying to convey and as such there seems to be a soullessness in music today with only a few artists daring to try to recreate or bring back the original sounds of music leaving one (myself) to ask ; is there a war of sorts taking place in the music industry between those who want to write, compose and produce real music of all genres once again versus those that only want to turn a quick dollar with no concern with the lives which get destroyed in the process. What do you think???

Jack Knight, You are definitely moving and working in the right direction as this type of site is much needed especially for this next generation of songwriters and entertainers that will shape the future of not only the music industry but society as a whole. Keep doing what you do and together all of us can make that change that is very much necessary for the betterment of humanity.
I am more a songwriter than an a singer. I can do a little something though. My argument has been the same for some time now and that is the music industry telling the people what they want to hear. If noone puts "MUSIC" out there for the people to hear, then they will go with their basic desire to hear music in some form or another. The industry doesn't follow Kingdom principles...if you work your gift, success (money, fame, etc.) will be the bi-product of that obedience. I don't worry about getting money and notariety. I just want to have the opportunity to bless someone through my songwriting in some way or another. Shouldn't that be the mission of any record label? If you release music that touches the people, they will purchase your music and in turn, the label will receive riches. Please stop holding back songs that "you" don't think will bang. The people are hungry and need to have their souls fed through many types and forms of music.
we can basically run down a list of reasons why music is in the state that it is in.

1. WE LIVE IN A IMAGE-CONSCIENCE WORLD WHERE THE PERCEPTION OF TALENT IS PUT AHEAD OF ACTUAL UNDENIABLE TALENT. IT STRETCHES FROM MUSIC TO MOVIES, SPORTS, FASHION AND SO ON. WE'VE BECOME A WORLD THAT ONLY WANTS TO SEE PROMINENCE AND PRESTIGE AT THE COST OF PRIDE, DIGNITY, WORK ETHIC, AND SELF VALUE.

2. THE MEDIA ALWAYS PLAYS TO DESIRES OF THOSE TAKE IT IN NO MATTER HOW INAPPROPRIATE THEY MAY BE AND THIS CAUSES INTRIGUE WHICH BUILDS INTO STRONG DESIRE WHICH MANIFESTS ITSELF IN THE FORM OF INDULGENCE IN IT. AFTER WE HEAR ONE SOUND OR VIEW ONE IMAGE IT BECOMES THAT MUCH EASIER TO ACCEPT THE NEXT ONE AND THE NEXT ONE UNTIL THAT BECOMES ALL WE WANT TO TAKE IN.

3. SAMPLING: DON'T GET ME WRONG THIS HAS BEEN AND CONTINUES TO BE A GOOD MUSICAL TOOL WHEN ITS NOT ABUSED. SAMPLING HAS BROUGHT ABOUT SOME WONDERFUL SONGS WORTH REMEMBERING BUT IT HAS ALSO LEFT YOU SAYING TIMES "THEY MESSED THAT SONG UP OR WHY DID THEY SAMPLE THAT". I THINK WE NEED TO TAKE IT BACK A STEP TO THE DAYS WHEN CATS WERE ACTUALLY MUSICIANS. THEY TOOK TIME TO MOLD AND REFINE THEIR CRAFT AND BE MORE THAN JUST A GUY WHO SITS IN THE STUIDO POSTED UP ON THE DRUM MACHINE AND MIXING BOARDS. MUSICIANSHIP ALWAYS GIVES YOU AN EYE AND AN EAR FOR NEW APPROACHES TO YOUR MUSIC. IT HELPS YOU MAKE SOMETHING THAT IS ALL YOUR OWN.

4. MOB MENTALITY: WE'VE GOTTEN CAUGHT UP IN THIS MOVEMENT OF JUST BEING A FACE IN THE CROWN INSTEAD OF STANDING OUT FROM IT EVEN WHEN WE KNOW ITS WRONG. IN THE ABSENCE OF LEADSHIP OR GUIDANCE PEOPLE WILL LISTEN TO WHOEVER SPEAKS UP FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE. WE HAVE TO STOP BEING SATISFIED WITH FITTING IN THE MOLD AND DECIDE TO MAKE OUR OWN MOLD.

I COULD GO ON AND ON WITH FACTORS LIEK DOWNLOADING, GREED, DISTRIBUTION AND SO ON BUT I'LL STOP HERE FOR NOW ...........I'M GLAD YOU POSTED THIS REV....THOUGHT PROVOKING.
I think you hit it on the nose w your whole statement. I dont think there is a war at all, I just think there is a monopoly in place when it comes to the bigger companies. I know of tons of great writers, rappers, and producers who GET IT, but when they try to send the message to the masses they kinda get pushed to the back. Only thing I can say is to keep pushing it, thats the only way it will get out.
Your right Rev! Songwriting skills and composing skills are not used much anymore. As an example people back in the day would tell stories. Now people sing about sexual expose's that are borderline pornographic. People tried to say that, "oh well Marvin Gaye and Barry White sung about sex", but they told a story they talked about making love, and how they wined and dined this lady and their words were poetic in how they wanted her. They had game! Now its just, "I saw you in the club your body was bangin and we went to my crib and freaked all night long", no lyrical skills not to mention over a techno slash R&B beat that they call mainstream R&B. It's terrible!
